FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Room in the Bowl book gives back to culinary community

New Orleans, April 14, 2009 – Room in the Bowl: The IACP Gumbo Giveback Project, 132 pages of beautiful visual and written ruminations on the ingredients and experiences associated with Louisiana’s iconic dish, combines the work of top photographers and writers in an effort to give back to the culinary community.  Proceeds from the book are divided equally between the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB) and The Culinary Trust, the philanthropic partner of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP).  Edited by Jamie Tiampo and David Gallent, the book is exclusively available through SoFAB’s store and website.

The IACP held a conference in New Orleans in April, 2008.  During the conference the members of the Photographers and Food Stylists and the Food Writers sections decided to create a permanent record of their visit by documenting the components of gumbo – meaning gumbo in the largest sense of the word.  All of the contributors donated their work and time.  Room in the Bowl is the result.

Room in the Bowl is a true collaboration of writers and photographers dedicated to the betterment of their communities through support of organizations committed to preserving and exploring culinary heritage.  “Room in the Bowl is a wonderful story of great food and successful collaboration.  The IACP has a chronicle of its visit to New Orleans, SoFAB has a great book and will have a terrific exhibit, and readers have a pleasurable, mouth watering read," says Liz Williams, Director of SoFAB.

“This project preserves and examines associations with gumbo through photography and personal essays, while donating the net proceeds to organizations that can further the examination and preservation of our delicate foodways.  This book will make a great Mother’s Day Gift.”  says Stephanie Jane Carter, a contributing writer to the book and Editorial Director of SoFAB.

SoFAB will hold a book release party and signing on May 23, 2009 at 2 p.m.  Several contributing writers and photographers will sign the book.  Naturally, there will be plenty of gumbo.  Proceeds from the book are split equally between the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and The Culinary Trust, which is the philanthropic partner to the IACP.

The Culinary Trust solicits, manages and distributes funds for educational and charitable programs related to the culinary industry, and is the philanthropic partner of the IACP.   Its Endangered Treasures Program recently funded the restoration of the world’s oldest existing cookery manuscript, the 9th century Apicius manuscript held by The New York Academy of Medicine.

The Southern Food and Beverage Museum is a nonprofit living history organization dedicated to the discovery, understanding and celebration of the food, drink and the related culture of the American South. It opened in June 2008 at the Riverwalk Marketplace in New Orleans. The museum hosts special exhibits, demonstrations, lectures and tastings that showcase the food and drink of the South. It cooperates with local and regional museums, restaurants, theaters, academic institutions and artists to present richly-textured experiences in multiple venues. www.southernfood.org.
